We found Perturbatio to be very effective in engaging the audience in meaningful discussions about ecology. Both thanks to its visually incitative and interactive nature, and because of the message the installation carries.
At Wissenschaftspark in Gelsenkirchen our team of artists was able to meet its public during the day it was displayed. Whether it was the audience specifically coming to the LeCAKE event (school classes and afternoon visitors) or simply people working at Wissenschaftspark. The digital nature of the installation, the feedback loop from the camera and the visual curiosity of point clouds really caught the attention of the audience.
Many quickly understood the relationship between their movements and the perturbation of the point cloud. The interactive nature was a cause of great interest that often translated into questions and remarks about Perturbatio. Thus the importance of mediation from the artists that were able to engage with the audience and explain the context of the creation of Perturbatio and disseminate the content learned during the various work packages of Le CAKE Project.
In the “live” installation that lasted over several days in the windows of mxrLab, audience information sheets were displayed to enable a mediation between the artists and the public. In particular, the ecological intention behind the installation was stated.
