2a. Development of the installation / performance etc.
Colors of Waiting first started by the reading of books; Kandinsky, Concerning the spiritual in art, and Sylvain Tesson , The Art of Patience.
Those books share common points ; they are a call for observation and introspection. They are both a proposal to pay attention to what is around us and notice how it affects us – dealing with contemplation, which very important aspect is silence.
They would for example stand that music is to be appreciated because it is made with silence in between notes and rhythm. The presence of an animal is appreciated because there was emptiness before it arrived and after it was gone.
This contemplation, this art of attention – through different senses – resonates very much like an awareness to ecology. Ecology is also about what is around us, and ourselves ; the environment in which we are living affects us directly. Noise pollution does exist.
The whole installation was then built on this mindset, in this flow.
The installation is a living metaphor of the content of the texts (contemplation invitation)
- With importance given to observation, silence, and creating a resting, comfortable atmosphere.
- A break from words and noise, from standing, from speaking.
- A wish to create something simple, that goes to the essential, “calm and frugal”.
2b. Colour of Waiting Recipe
Essential Ingredients:
- Two or more texts inspiring reflection and ecological awareness.
- Complementary images to evoke emotion and connection.
- A calm, cozy space with ecological design principles.
- Simple, flexible tools (postcards, textiles, cushions) for interaction.
Preparation Method:
- Combine texts and images into a cohesive narrative.
- Arrange them in an inviting, minimalist space.
- Let the audience engage freely, ensuring the installation feels organic and open-ended.
> Adapt the installation’s scale to suit different spaces, from intimate rooms to large public venues.
> Customize the mood using local materials and cultural references.
> Think of “immersion”: the audience participates in the installation because people are in it, inside of a world created. The makers have to take in account the importance of the audience somehow being active ; by the association of words, image, installation, the audience is to understand what it is about, and is also led to understand without any guidance the invitation to enter, look, settle, read, stay, feel free.
2c. Ecological considerations
For Colours of Waiting, sustainability was taken in account by the material used, going with the frugal and contemplative aspects of the performance; very low energy consuming, since already existing in the storage (carpets, pillows, paper, clothes), and absolutely no electricity required.
Ecology is not addressed directly; it is brought through a “lifestyle” given by the installation itself.
Colours of Waiting serves as a living metaphor for ecological awareness, drawing parallels between artistic contemplation and sustainable living. By focusing on silence, the installation inspires participants to reconnect with themselves and their environment, offering a powerful tool for fostering ecological mindfulness in any context.
